SMALLEST 3-DIGIT NUMBER
SMALLEST 3-DIGIT NUMBER
The positive three-digit numbers are represented in the number line from 100-999. All these numbers have three digits. The smallest three-digit number from the mentioned number line is 100, and the greatest three-digit number from the same is 999. A total of 899 three-digit numbers are there in between 100 and 999.
Let us briefly discuss the properties, and the terminology related to three-digit numbers.
What do you mean by three-digit numbers?
Three-digit numbers are also called numbers with three digits in them. A number in the ones place, a number in the tens place, a number in the hundreds place. These are the numbers that start from one hundred and extend up to nine hundred and ninety-nine. We can place any digit (0-9) in ones place and tens place in a three-digit number. However, in the hundreds place, we can place any number except 0.
Example
In a three-digit number, the place values start from right and increases as we move towards the left-from ones place to tens place to the hundreds place. The place value of the digits increases 10 times with each successive place from right to left.
Let us take a three-digit number 671.
The following table shows Place value of the number is 671
HUNDREDS (H) | TENS (T) |
ONES(O) |
|
Digits | 6 | 7 | 1 |
Place Value | 6 x 100 | 7 x 10 | 1x 1 |
How 100 is the smallest three-digit number?
The hundreds place cannot have 0 as a valid digit. So the number 012 is an invalid three-digit number. It is a two-digit number. Hence to form a valid three-digit number, we can place any digit from 1-9 in the hundreds place. And rest two places (tens and ones) can take any digits ranging from 0 to 9. Therefore the total possible combination to form a five-digit number is 900 ways.
Hundreds (H) |
Tens (T) |
Ones (0) |
|
Digits | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Place Value | 1×100 | 0 x10 | 0 x1 |
So, the smallest number that we can put in the hundreds place is 1. Similarly, we can put 0 in the tens place, and the ones place as 0 is the smallest digit from the possible range of 0 to 9. Thus, we obtain the smallest three-digit number is 100 as shown in the above table.
