Place Value System: Explanation, Charts, Examples and FAQ

Place Value and Place Value System

In a given number, each digit has a place value based on its position in that number. Since the place value is based on the position, it is different for every digit in the number.

For example, in the number 5197,

Place value of 7 = 7 ones = 7 × 1 = 7

Place value of 9 = 9 tens = 9 × 10 = 90

Place value of 1 = 1 hundred = 1 × 100 = 100

Place value of 5 = 5 thousands = 5 × 1000 = 5000

It is also possible that a number has two similar digits but with different place values.
For example, In the number 3255, the rightmost 5 represents 5 ones, or 5. Whereas the other 5 represents 5 tens, or 50. Note that a digit can appear multiple times, but its value depends on its position in the number.

Now we will discuss the place value system.

In Mathematics, a place value system is very helpful to know the position of any digit in a given number. It also helps us to read and write any number correctly.

Here, we have provided the place value charts for the Indian and International number systems. Go through this chart and you will be able to find the place value of any digit in any given number.

Indian Place Value Chart

This chart is used in India. It is a table that we use to find the place value of each digit in any given number as per the Indian number system.

International Place Value Chart

The International number system is used worldwide. This chart is used to find the value of each digit in any given number as per the International numeral system.

Indian and International Place Value Chart: Comparison

Till ten thousand (10,000), both the charts are the same, but when we move ahead, these two charts show some differences as explained in the table below.

Place Value System For Decimals

According to the place value system, the place values of digits after the decimal point are read in the order of Tenths, Hundredths, Thousandths, and so on.

For Example: In the decimal number 21.358

1 is at Ones place.

2 is at Tens place.

3 is at Tenths place.

5 is at Hundredths place and

8 is at Thousandths place.

Examples

1.  In the number 5420, find the digits at thousands place and hundreds place?

Solution:

In the number 5420,

The digit at thousands place = 5

And the digit at hundreds place = 4

2. Find the place value of:

a) 2 in 24109

b) 4 in 93410

Solution:

As per the place value chart,
a) 2 is at ten thousands place in the number 24109.
So, place value of 2 in 24109 = 20000.
b) 4 is at hundreds place in 93410.
So, the place value of 4 in 93410 = 400.
