Proper Fraction
Fraction means a part of a whole number. Generally, fractions are represented as \frac{\text{x}}{\text{y}}, where x and y are whole numbers where x represents numerator(the number which is on top of the fraction) and y represents denominator(the number which is on the bottom of the fraction) and y≠0.
As we can see in the image above, a whole can be divided in different ways, and we identify these different ways as the fraction(i.e, a part of the whole number).
We call a fraction a proper fraction when the numerator is less than the denominator i.e, the value of \frac{x}{y} should be less than zero.

1. Is \frac{5}{8} a proper fraction?
Solution:
Yes, \frac{5}{8} is a proper fraction as 5 is the numerator and 8 is the denominator.
5 < 8 which satisfy the condition of a proper fraction.
2. Is \frac{17}{7} a proper fraction?
Solution:
No, \frac{17}{7} is not a proper fraction as 17 is the numerator and 7 is the denominator.
17 ≮ 7, which does not satisfy the condition of a proper fraction.
