FACTORS OF 23 WITH EXAMPLES AND FAQ

Any number is a factor of a number if it divides the number without leaving any remainder behind. For example, 2 is a factor of 4, 5 is a factor of 20, etc. 23 is a prime number and hence it has no factors other than 1 and itself, i.e., the factors of 23 are 1 and 23. Here, 1 is the smallest factor and 23 itself is its biggest factor.

How to determine factors of 23?

Factors of 23 by Division Method

Let’s find the factors by simply dividing 23 by all the numbers starting from 1 to 23 and see which number divides 23 without leaving a remainder. We see that when 23 is divided by 1, and 23 the remainder is 0. Hence 1 and 23 are the only factors of 23.

Prime factorization of 23

23 is a prime number and hence it has no other factors leaving 1 and itself.

∴ Prime factorization of 23 is 23 × 1.

Factors of 23 in Pairs

A factor pair includes the set of two numbers whose product will give the number as the product. Factor pairs of 23 are:

1×23 = 23, Hence the factor pair is (1, 23)

The product of two negative numbers is positive. The negative factor pairs of 23 are:

(-1)×(-23) = 23, Hence the factor pair is (-1, -23)

Examples

Example 1: What is the sum and product of the factors of 23?

Solution The factors are 23 and 1.

∴ Sum of factors = 23 + 1 = 24

∴ Product of factors = 23 × 1 = 23

Example 2: Determine the Greatest Common Factor of 21 and 23.

Solution: The factors of 21 are 1, 3, 7  and that of 23 are 1 and 23. 21 and 23 have only one common factor which is 1. This implies that 21 and 23 are co-prime.

Hence, The Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of 21 and 23 is 1.
