International Place Value Chart – Explanation and Examples

International Place Value Chart: Explanation

You already know about the Indian number system. The International number system is one more method of representing numbers. Like the Indian number system, the International number system also has different periods formed to read the large numbers easily.  Here we use ones, thousands and millions as periods.

In the International place value system, we have three periods for the nine places from right to left: Ones, thousands and millions.

The difference between the Indian place value chart and the International place value chart is the nomenclature of different place values and placement of the commas.

  • The 1st period consists of Ones, Tens and Hundreds places for both Indian and international value systems.
  • The 2nd period consists of Thousand,  Ten Thousands, and Hundred Thousands places for the International place value chart.
  • The 3rd period consists of Million, Ten Million and Hundred Million for the International place value system.

As per the International number system, we insert the first comma after the hundreds place and then after every three digits.

For example: In the number 753,421,809 the place value of each digit are:

7 – Ones Place

5 – Tens Place

3 – Hundreds Place

4 – Thousands Place

2 – Ten Thousands Place

1 – Hundred Thousands Place

8 – Millions Place

0 – Ten Millions Place

9 – Hundreds Millions Place

How to Read Numbers as per the International System?

To read the number according to the International System, we read all the digits together in the same period, followed by the name of the period from left to right.

For Example, we read 43,190,825  as “Forty-three million one hundred ninety thousand eight hundred twenty-five”.
