NUMBER NAMES (1 TO 50 SPELLING)

NUMBER NAMES FROM 1 TO 50

What are number names? They are exactly the ‘names’ of the number expressed in words. The numbers 1 to 20 have different spellings but post 20, the numbers form a generic pattern. We will see this in the table below where we have written the spellings of numbers 1 to 50.

It is essential to understand the place value of the numbers to write the number in words. The number 10 is written as ten, 20 is written as twenty, 30 is written as thirty, 40 is written as forty, 50 as fifty, 60 as sixty, 70 as seventy, 80 as eighty, 90 as ninety. For example, in the number 21, the digit 2 is at the tens place and can be written as twenty. The digit at the ones place is 1 and can be written as one.  In the expanded form,

 21 = 20 + 1

 So, the number 21 can be written by joining the word form of 20 and 1 as twenty-one

Now the numbers with a digit at its tens place and ones place can be written by combining the word form of those digits. For example – 43 [which is (40 + 3)] can be written by joining the word form of 40 and 3 which is forty-three

NUMBER NAMES FOR NUMBERS GREATER THAN 100

It is also important to understand how we write numbers that are multiples of 100, 1000 and so on. Understanding of place value comes in handy here. The multiples of 100 are written as follows:

With this, we can write the number names of

  • 247

247 = 200 + 40 + 7

This number can be written as two hundred forty-seven

  • 1482

1482 = 1000 + 400 + 80 + 2

This number can be written as one thousand four hundred eighty-two.

NUMBER NAMES IN DIFFERENT NUMBER SYSTEMS

The numbers are read differently under different number systems. Let us understand this with an example here. Consider the number 546810923.  Here, given below in the table, we see how to read the number 546810923 under Indian and International number systems.

The digit 1 is read as ten thousand only but the digit 8 is written as eight lakhs as per the Indian number system and written as eight hundred thousand in the International number system. Thus, understanding the place value and the number system is very important.
