What do you mean by Place Value?

In Maths, every digit in a number represents a place value. A place value of a digit is its value according to its position in the number. The place value of the digits in a number starts from ones or units place, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on from right to left. In the general form of a number, its digits are expanded starting from the units place and so on as per its position.

The place value of any digit is the value of the position that a digit holds in a number – ones, tens, or hundreds, etc. But we say the face value of a digit in a number is its actual value in the number itself.

 

Understand with the Example

The digit 7 in the number 3789 represents 7 hundred and if we rewrite the number as 3879 then, the place value of the digit 7 is 7 tens. We can say the face value of the digit remains the same i.e. 7, but the place value will depend on the position that a digit holds in a number.

Let’s look at the relationship between the place and place value of the digits of 3879.

  

 

Example: Find out the place value of each digit in the number 1058.

Solution:

The correct place value of each digit in the number 1058

The place value of digit ‘1’ = 1 × 1000

The place value of digit ‘0’ = 0 × 100

The place value of digit ‘5’ = 5 × 10

The place value of digit ‘8’ = 8 × 1

 

Place Value Chart

A place value chart helps us to find the position of a digit correctly and compare the place value of digits given in a number. In this chart or diagram the place value of digits in a number increases by 10 times as we move left and decreases by 10 times as we move right. To find out the place value of the digits accurately, we write the numbers in the place value chart, then in the general form.

Types of Place Value Charts

Following are the types of Place value charts:

  1. Indian Place Value Chart- based on the Indian number system.
  2. International Place Value Chart- based on the International number system.

The difference between the Indian and the International numeric system is the placement of commas and terminology of different place values.

 

Indian Place Value Chart

Indian Place Value Chart is the table that defines the place value of digits according to the positions of the digits in the number as per the Indian number system.

International Place Value Chart

International Place Value Chart is the table that defines the place value of digits in a number according to the positions of the digits in the number as per the International number system.

 

Place Value Chart with Decimal or Decimal Place Value Chart

A decimal number is a mixed fraction that consists of a whole number and fraction together. Here the fractional part is separated by placing a decimal point after the whole number part of the decimal place value chart where we go towards right from the unit place, the next place value decreases by \frac{1}{10} times i.e. one-tenth position. Thus, the first digit on the right of the decimal point is \frac{1}{10}.

Examples

1. How to represent the number 138.76 in place value charts for decimals. Write the number name.

Solution:

In the number 138.76, 138 is the whole part, and 76 is the decimal part.

1 is in the hundreds place, so place value is 100

3 is the tens place, so the place value is 30.

8 is in the unit place, so the place value is 8.

7 is in the tenth place so, the place value is 0.7, or we can write it as  \frac{7}{10}.

6 is in the hundredths place so, the place value is 0.06, or we can write it as \frac{6}{100}.

Quick Facts: The place value and face value of a number are not the same. In the number 138.76, the face value of number 1 is the actual number itself i.e. 1. The place value of 1 in this number is 100.

The number 138.76 is written as One hundred thirty-eight and seventy-six hundredths.

2. A number has 8 thousands, 4 hundreds, 7 tens, and zero ones. Write the number?

Solution:

The place of the number given:

8 thousands = 8000.

4 hundreds = 400.

7 tens = 70.

Zero ones = 0.

On adding the place value of the number, we get: 8000 + 400 + 70 + 0 = 8470

Thus, the number is 8470.
